Policy for the environment and safety at the workplaces, represents the guide for arranging and improving the Integrated Management System so to preserve and improve its performances.
The statement and definition of the general and inspirational principles happens in the review of the Management. The principles come from the enforcement of voluntary and binding rules and laws, but also from the real sensitivity that the Management and the organization, demonstrate, on the whole, towards the environment and in relation to the health and safety subjects at the workplaces. The principles are revised and in case confirmed year by year.
Policy refers to the activity and services carried out, it's is suitable for the nature, dimension and environmental impacts and on the staff's safety of the business activities and provides the reference frame to establish and to re-examine the objectives and goals.
Policy is elaborated and defined from the Management with the collaboration of RGI,RSPP, RLS and the qualified doctor, according to the company's general principles and politics, by considering laws, national and/or local rules and productive programs. Policy is verified, integrated, updated and subjected to a new approval every year, in the light of the results of internal and external Audit.
Policy is communicated and disclosed to all staff through the direct diffusion in order to promote, at all levels, a sense of responsibility towards the internal and external setting as well as health and safety subjects.
Policy is made public, through direct communications, to Augusta's Town Hall, to the Province of Siracuse, to the Sicily Region, to the police and the check forces, to the Customs Agency, to the Revenue Guard Corps, to the Police, the qualified ASP, the Port Authority of Augusta, to the main agencies for the environmental control of territory (ARPA), to the companies moving in the port area, to the Suppliers and Contractors, to the shipping companies that come alongside the terminal's quays, and, through the publication on the web site, to the citizens and organizations, however, interested in it. All this in order to make available to the public the information necessary to understand the environmental and safety impacts of the business activities and also in order to make them know the commitments carried out.
Policy is a declaration including the engagement for the pollution, industrial accidents and working diseases prevention as well as for a continuous improvement; this policy is in compliance with the engagement for conforming to the legal requirements of the environmental and safety management.
The definition of our policy is the first step for the creation and maintenance of a Integrated Management System (SGI).
The International Terminal Service Society, during the execution of its own activities commits to:
- Carry out, maintain effective and improve the Management Integrated Safety and Security System in order to reduce the environmental impacts and for the control of the aspects about health and safety on the workplace;
- Always, guarantee maximum training and information to the whole staff about their activities;
- Constantly, check the staff's knowledge about the environmental and safety themes;
- Promote a maximum staff's participation to the management of the integrated system;
- Always, maintain, the compliance with the laws and regulations in force applicable to its own organization, as well as to all the requirements identified and subscribed by the organization, in order to prevent any type of environmental impacts and, in working range, accidents and individual culpable damages committed in breaking of the laws on the preservation of health at work;
- Work for the prevention of pollution;
- Work in a constant way for the prevention of the accidents and working illnesses;
- Take every type of necessary measures for a better and better reply to the emergency situations;
- Maintain a wholesome workplace in order to preserve the workers' health.
In the logic of the continuous improvement of its own environmental and safety services, the International Terminal Service shoots the following objectives:
- Communicate to its own staff and, where necessary, to the community the necessary information in order to understand the effects, on the environment and on the people's health and safety about its own activities.
- Promote the responsibility of the staff of every type of level towards the environmental protection and the prevention of accidents and professional illnesses, by making schedules of information and training, and assuring, the staff's participation to the application of the integrated environment and safety system;
- Improve the management and garbage disposal, with particular attention to the garbage separation.
- Improve the controls for the prevention of the accidents and the analysis equipments for the same;
- Proceed with periodic practices in order to maintain high the staff's qualification to the emergency situations and guarantee their sensitivity to the subjects relate to safety;
- Improve the recording of the data concerning the water, electrical and energy consumption;
- Exert influence and control on the principle suppliers in order to sensitize them to the respect of the performances expected on the subject of safety and environment.
- Work in order that the Police and all the forces of check as well as the officers of the Custom Agency and the Revenue Guard Corps, can work in safety.
Port Security
On December 2002 IMO (International Maritime Organization) introduced a new international maritime safety system as well as a new international ISPS (International Ship and Port Facility Security) Code. The regulations, in force from the 1st of July, 2004, represents a complex of rules necessary to reinforce the protection of the maritime transport and establishes the implementation of a safety plan including the assets and liabilities measures to carry out which are composed to the safety levels established by the law. The International Terminal Service, by complying with the rules and in relation to the checks and analysis of the Port Authority, received by the Harbour Office of Augusta, under the law n…, the consent for the safety plan drawn by the Terminal. IMO registered at the international number the International Terminal Service as a port structure recognized by the International Maritime Organization.
SAFETY POLICY
The International Terminal Service's, declared as Port System, well-aware of its own responsibility about what has been established by the SOLAS Convention chapter XI-2, engages in dedicating the maximum commitment to the management of Safety, Security and the Environmental Protection. The International Terminal Service establishes that every type of operations, carried out by its own staff , should be performed with a maximum engagement in order to reach the company objectives, both the ones about the Safety, Security and that about the Environmental Protection, as following reported:
- Protect the Terminal with measures of prevention from possible terroristic attacks or criminal acts.
- Look out in order that goods are moved in safety conditions.
- Work on the moored ship in a safe way.
- Maintain every type of means and systems used at the Terminal at a maximum level of technical and operative efficiency.
- Look out on the prevention of the accidents.
- Promote the consciousness, the culture and knowledge about the Security among the internal staff which is responsible for the management of Terminal and it's necessary to give some information both to the external firms working inside the Terminal and the visitors.
In order to reach these objectives, the International Terminal Service commits to provide the necessary resources and well-qualified staff, to recognize specific jobs and responsabilities, to establish the training requirements and to coordinate all the activities as to:
- Guarantee the safe efficiency of the Terminal in compliance with the national and international applicable laws.
- Establish measures and counter-measures against every type of identified risks.
- Constantly improve, the technical qualification and the staff's operative efficiency.
- Maintain the maintenance of all the means and systems used inside the Terminal at a maximum level.
- Always be ready to face any type of emergency situations, also unexpected.
- When required, cooperate with the Authorities in charge of, in order to face emergency situations both on earth and on the sea near the Terminal.
The International Terminal Service's direction periodically reconsiders, the effectiveness of its own policy, in order to assure that prefixed objectives are reached and the procedures and instruction carrying out are appropriate and effective.
ACTIVITIES
Every type of business effort is addressed to the efficiency of facilities and to a standard of highly advanced quality (the Company has obtained the certification ISO 9001-2001 by always working in respect of the law in matter of safety).
